The Yates Community Center Complex Development Project Continues Forward!!! The Timbers have arrived! Full speed ahead!

Several community members came out to enjoy refreshments and watch as the barn timbers arrived to their new home at the Yates Community Center (Yates Cultural and Recreational Resources, Inc. YCRR) site at 467 North Main Street on December 13, 2012. The new Community Center building will be built around this locally resourced 150 year old hand- hewn barn frame, which will be carefully disassembled before it is relocated to the Community Center Complex. The post- and- beam structure will be fully exposed through out the 2,500 square foot main level of the new building. Outfitted with sliding barn doors and a metal standing-seam roof, the building will appear as a renovated barn, with an exterior clad in natural cedar siding.

The new facility is being designed with the help of Penn Yan resident Tom Johnson, a designer experienced in relocating, restoring, and incorporating historic antique barn structures into re-purposed buildings. In addition to working internationally, Johnson has built several local residential and commercial buildings, featured in local and national publications. Johnson will help manage the barn raising process, working with Benton Builders a local Mennonite builder. They will erect the antique structure and also help complete the building. In addition, YCRR will be seeking bids from other local contractors for many other aspects of the building.

This is just the beginning of the many phases that are ahead as the plans to build and develop the Yates Community Center Complex unfold! Please contact Katie Peterson, Board Chairman, at kpeterson@yatescommunitycenter.org or Pam Griffith, Executive Director of YCRR, Inc. at pamgriffith@yatescommunitycenter.org with any questions.

Today the focus of the community center remains the same. However, based on the current economic climate the board is in the process developing a plan with several phases that will allow the project to unfold throughout the next couple of years at a fraction of the cost.

The board has agreed on a concept for the facility, celebrating the local heritage of Yates County’s farming community. The building will be built around a locally resourced 150 year old hand-hewn barn frame, carefully disassembled and relocated to the Community Center Complex. The post-and-beam structure will be fully exposed throughout the 2,500 square foot main level.

As YCRR moves forward its vision of the complex is to connect past efforts with the current plan in order to create the new community complex. The new plan allows YCRR to uphold its original intention by satisfying many of the identified needs of our community at a much lower cost. The plan, as with the original, does not include using tax payer dollars.

The mission of YCRR will be accomplished with the support and cooperation of key community partners and the entire community joining in to make the long time dream a reality. Together the community will build an architecturally pleasing, 5000+ square foot multiuse structure, purchase a concession trailer and complete fields and trails with a storage pavilion with restrooms on 14 acres of land in the village of Penn Yan, N.Y. As a not-for-profit we will use memberships and dues, volunteer support, space rental, concessions, fund raising, private funding sources, grant writing and sound management practices to build and sustain this operation.

The Mission remains the same:

Yates Cultural & Recreational Resources, Inc.’s (YCRR) mission is to enhance the physical and mental well being of Yates County residents by promoting and providing cultural, recreational, athletic and educational opportunities in Yates County.

The latest developments are:

The regulation size field is completed and will be ready for use in spring of 2013

A grant for $50,000 has been received from the William G. Mc Gowen Charitable Fund

The plans for the building are in the process of being completed

Additional grant applications have been sent out for consideration

Two fundraisers in partnership with the youth sports programs are planned so far for 2013

Breakfast at the Penn Yan Moose Jan. 13, 2013 Sun. 8-10am

Dinner Chicken & Biscuits at the Elks Feb. 6, 2013 Wed. 5-7pm

Throughout the last several years, the YCRR has developed unique partnerships with key organizations in the community that will serve as a foundation for the cultural and recreational needs and services desired by county residents. This includes but is not limited to: social and recreational opportunities for seniors, programs for family and individual development, positive recreational and athletic opportunities for all youth, improved locations for sports and fitness programs, exercise programs for all ages, and a meeting facility for area organizations.

The Community Center board now consists of a combination of the founding members of the project and many new members with Katie Peterson as the new chairman. For the last year, the board has been in the process of assessing the needs of the community. Naturally, the requirements have changed since the original concept of a community center in Penn Yan was explored.

We are all very excited & committed to this project and are looking forward to developing the Yates Community Center Complex. Stay tuned for more updates as we move along with building the complex!

A little history of the project…

In 2001, a number of concerned citizens lead by Dr. Ed Eaves met to address what they perceived to be a real need in the community – to put it simply, the need to expand current recreation opportunities for young people in the area. After weeks of informal discussion and talks with community leaders, they recognized the need was much broader. In fact, it was extended to almost all segments of the community. The YCRR concept was formulated and initiated in 2002. It was envisioned to be a 25,000 square foot facility with a projected cost of $3,000,000 located within the village limits on 14 acres of land. In 2005, YCRR established a Fitness & Wellness Center in a leased building located near the future site of the YCRR property. The Center is self sustaining and managed by a strong group of volunteers to this day.

The Yates Community Center Complex property is located just off of North Main Street in the village of Penn Yan on 14 acres of land. The Maeske Family generously donated this land on June 30th 2005. It is less than 1 mile from the Penn Yan village center, just down the street from the middle school, three blocks from the elementary school and high school and about a block from the Soldiers and Sailors Hospital.
